Bookmaker William Hill is working on its own virtual reality applications which will enable customers to view a live horse race through the eyes of a jockey, giving them an unique opportunity to experience how the race unfolds.
Using data collected from real life races, GPS trackers and an exact 3D model of a racetrack, Hill expects that apparatus like Google Cardboard and Oculus Rift will let users see a race through the eyes of a jockey. The technology would have the ability to demonstrate info about the horse, race locations by transferring their heads and let the user look around their environment. While it’s presently unavailable to the people, the bookmaker intends to contain support virtual reality within their official program near to Christmas.
“Now you put a wager instead of much happens between that and the result,” said Crispin Nieboer, William Hills’ manager of innovation. “We need to bring customers closer to the sport activity, to experience the thrill of the ride.“
Some critics have expressed concern the inclusion of new technology including virtual reality could cause gaming becoming glamorized. On the other hand, the UK’s Gambling Commission had verified that it’ll track any such innovations to be sure they don’t motivate individuals to gamble excessively.
